Project Description
Photography is visual storytelling
Jess’ love for photography and videography began when she was an adolescent. Growing up in San Antonio from a working-class family she escaped reality by diving into art. She loved writing and recording skits and editing them into short films. She begged her parents to buy her a camcorder for Christmas. She was very fortunate her plea was answered. She recorded everything and everyone. She would bring her camcorder during bike rides, skateboarding, music shows, birthday parties, and family outings. She even made a historical reenactment for a class project with a few peers and received a district award for going the extra mile to produce a short docufilm. These moments planted the seed of love she has for documenting narratives.
In college, she studied English and Women Studies with a focus on Latinx art. Her research centered on Latinx, queer, women artists. During her research and work at the San Antonio Conservation Society, she realized the number of historical narratives from minority communities was limited. She felt a great responsibility to not only document narratives through literary forms but also visually. That is when creative, inquisitive, passionate Jess was revitalized and she picked up her camera.
Photography is how Jess captures stories that are marginalized. Photography is her creative release. She can create and recreate stories and futures.
She is a light seeker. She loves to chase moments and capture moments. Let’s make magic!
